They are a lost people.

How have I not seen this before!? I found this post which explains the deleted scenes of Avengers regarding Loki. Seriously Loki’s speeches in Avengers is genius writing. This part is another one of those ambiguous speeches that is a self-reflection on Loki’s part:

“They are a lost people. They mistake selfishness for spirit. When the sky falls it’ll be every man for himself.” – Loki

He doesn’t only talk about humans. He is talking about himself too and referring to the events of Thor 1, that he was lost, that he mistook selfishness for spirit and when disaster happened he was thinking about himself.

“How will you rule them then?” – Other

‘Unmericifully.“ – Loki

And this part is about Odin. It’s about what Odin did to him. It’s about how Odin treated him unfairly and when he was lost Odin cast him out unmercifully with “No Loki”. And so this is how Loki plans to rule these lost humans. The way Odin ruled him.
