Tiny garter snake has been dubbed Squid! She is tiny and cute. Pics from yesterday before I put her in her temporary enclosure, and today I’ve already gotten her to eat a piece of fish. Gotta make sure she eats regularly before finding her a home!

I love garters. They have such great personalities! So inquisitive!

black and red snakes

snakes with black and red scales use this striking colour contrast for self-defence. because bright colours are associated with venomous species, some nonvenomous species borrow the colours to feign being too dangerous to eat. other species like the ringneck use “flash colouration” by displaying their bright underbellies to briefly confuse predators, giving them an extra moment to escape.

pictured: redbellied black snake (pseudechis porphyriacus), mudsnake (farancia abacura), ringneck (diadophis punctatus), honduran milk (lampropeltis triangulum), bamboo rat (oreocryptophis porphyraceus) + black swamp snake (seminatrix pygaea)
